Arriving in Antarctica

Published on 20 November 2025 at 00:05

After 2 days crossing the Drake passage we arrived in Antarctica overnight.

I woke up just after 4:30am on Tuesday 18th November and looked out of my curtain to see floating ice, so knew we were here. I knew the view would be on the other side of the ship, so I put my waterproof trousers on top of my pyjamas bottoms, a fleece on top of my top, my coat, hat, gloves & boots and headed out to the observation deck.

I climbed the steps from deck 6 up to the observation deck on 7 and when I got to the top step I stopped in my tracks and was taken so completely aback from the sight that was in front of me that I burst into tears.

After a few minutes I managed to gather myself enough to go to the front of the deck. It was 4:45am and I was alone.

Here is was arriving in the most remote part of the planet and I got to experience that arrival alone. That was truly special.
