Wednesday 19th November
Up early for breakfast as on first group to go out kayaking this morning at 8:15.
Full kit on and boarded the zodiac out to the makeshift platform in the middle of the bay. We had to transfer from one zodiac to another - fun 😁
The kayaks are inflatables and really sturdy, so a good, less stressful option for a complete beginner like me. I was paired up with Lucy, another solo traveller and it was first time for us both.
First couple got in their kayak and then launch was delayed as a leopard seal was spotted swimming about. They are huge and can be very aggressive so we needed to wait. They moved the platform over to another part of the bay and the safety boats got between us and the seal. He realised we weren't breakfast so swam off.
We set off, but both of us struggled to get the hang of the paddling and we seemed to go around in circles. The paddle didn't seem set up the same way we'd practiced with in briefing and as neither of us seemed okay with it, we sat back, drifted and admired the views. Another kayaker paddled over and after chatting he swapped my paddle with his and took it off to the crew on the platform. That made a difference and we managed to get ourselves over to the platform and they then swapped Lucy's too and said ours had been put together incorrectly. Now with correct paddles we could actually go forwards, not user error after all 😂
