After visiting the memorial first thing I joined my trip to Volunteer Point.
To get there is a long 4x4 journey with 4 per vehicle. Thankfully i was in with Jan & Jo two fabulously funny women i have met onboard. The journey was interesting when we went off road and we got bogged twice, needing a tow 😂
Volunteer Point is a very, very special place. Home to thousands of breeding King penguins (another lifetime dream to see these in the wild) but also home to Magellanic penguins and Gentoos.
The King penguins are simply magnificent. There was around 800 chicks. Magellanic make burrows, so pop up all around. Was funny to see sheep roaming amongst them and a couple of lambs sheltering in one of the penguin burrows.
A young elephant seal pup was on the beach and there was an enormous sea lion in the water so the penguins were frightened to go in. Currently googling how to become a warden here so I can stay! A stunning place.
