Polar Plunge

Saturday 22nd November

We had been saying on ship how exceptionally lucky we had been with the weather and how it would be nice to experience the wind and snow we expected. On Deception Island that's what we got. However, this was also our last stop in Antarctica so the site of the polar plunge! It was going to be a proper Antarctica plunge.

A polar plunge is where some of the mad people on board (me included), strip off into their swimming costumes and run into the icy cold waters and plunge down to their chests (sometimes it's done as a jump off the ship, but being done from land this time).

After walking around Deception Island the plunge would be the last thing you do before going back on board.

Getting boats and all the layers off to get down to swimming costume (which we put on before going on landing) was the hard part. I did manage to persuade a couple of fellow travellers to do it too -as I say don't go home with regrets.

Mike (Barb's husband) kindly filmed us running in and all you can hear is him saying 'you're all mad!' 🤣

The water was cold 🄶 couldn't stay in for long but we did it!

Then trying to get dry enough to get clothes back on whilst you can't feel your fingers was fun!

No-one wants to see photos of me in a swimsuit so here's the certificate to prove i did it!
