Saunders Island - Falklands

Wednesday 26th November

Saunders Island in the Falklands today. Just back from my landing -boy is it windy on this island. That was some zodiac crossing, we got absolutely soaked even in waterproofs 😂

it was a very long and hilly hike once ashore to a rockhopper penguin colony. Wow! It was worth it. Rockhoppers are so funny to watch. It's a shame the blog doesn't let me post videos (I didn't pay for premium 😂) as i have some cracking clips.

That means I've now seen all the major penguins on this trip.

There were lots of Imperial Comorants nesting in amongst the rockhoppers, they are black & white so camouflage in well and nick bits of the penguins nests when not looking to build their own.

There was also a lot of upland geese and even a striated caracara who was trying to steal penguin eggs.

There was a Black-Browed Albatross colony, which was great to see so many nesting up close as these have been accompanying us across the Drake and are my allocated group.

Around the beach were lots of Magellanic penguins playing in the rough surf of the sea.

A family live on the island to take care of it so we even saw cows 🤣
